Businesses held back by lack of management skills Statistics show that 43% of businesses do not have a succession plan in place to ensure a future supply of managers. Nearly half of employers said this was due to a lack of capability of their existing employees and they relied on expensive external recruitment instead. However, there is a clear link between management and leadership capability and productivity and organisations should develop managers for their current role and potential future ones. This development can also assist with improved company culture and employee loyalty. It’s a good idea to develop essential skills, such as communication, people management and planning, before employees are promoted to management positions. Personal qualities such as leading by example, encouraging innovation, approachability and trust should not be sidelined and technical skills should not be overvalued. If you would like support in creating a succession plan for your business, we’d be happy to help.
